Psychiatric presentations and social consequences of hypothyroidism : case report

The aim of this case report is to show the wide range of different psychiatric presentations and social consequences of hypothyroidism.

Here a 46 year old female with hypothyroidism was misdiagnosed as having psychotic depression for 12 years.

The role of the physician in patient education and the consequences of misdiagnosis have been discussed.

Also, the relationship between hypothyroidism and hyperprolactenemia, quick response to replacement therapy and the importance of considering hypothyroidism in the differential diagnosis, especially of atypical psychiatric disorders, were evaluated.
