Species composition and seasonal variation of phytoplankton in the himreen reservoir in the middle of Iraq

The phytoplankton of the Himreen reservoir was studied from February 1999 to Jan.

2000.

A total of 98 algal species were identified, dominated by diatoms (69 species), followed by greens (15 species), blue green algae (10 species) and the other taxa (4 species).Diatoms were the dominant group in cell number followed by green and blue green algae.

The most dominant species in cell number were : Navicula cryptocephala, Nitzschia palee, Cymbella affinis, and Fragillaria ulna.

The numbers of species were different and showed irregular seasonal variations in the study stations.
