Chemical Composition and Anthelmintic Activity of Essential Oils of Three Cymbopogon Species of South Canara, India

The essential oil of three Cymbopogon species has been analyzed by GC-MS.

The major constituent of C.

citratus was found to be citral (67 %), geraniol (12 %), geranyl acetate (10 %) and limonine (6 %).

The major component of C.

flexuosus was found to be citral (61 %), geraniol (13 %), geranyl acetate (8 %) and limonine (6 %).

The major component of C.

nardus was found to be geraniol (58 %), citral (14 %), geranyl acetate (7 %) and limonine (4 %).

These essential oils were evaluated separately for anthelmintic activity.

The activities were better when compared to standard piperazine citrate.
