Plasmid mediated antibiotics resistance in hospital effluent system isolates of salmonella typhimurium

Seventeen multidrug resistant (MDR) isolates of Salmonella typhimurium obtained from hospital effluent system of Al-Forat hospital in Kufa were selected for plasmid detection and eight of these isolate were obtained for conjugation and curing experiments.

These isolates were also studied for plasmid mediated resistance.

All isolates were found to harbor R-plasmid (more than two plasmid bands).

Conjugation and curing experiments showed that resistance to most antibiotics were plasmid mediated, so it is suggested that plasmid should be characterized in all MDR S.

typhimurium isolates and a nation wide antibiotic policy should be made to minimize the emergence of drug resistance.
