Experimental evaluation of free gracilis muscle transplants in dogs with microsurgical vascular anastomosis

The present study was carried out on gracilis muscles of 45 clinically healthy national breed adult dogs of both sexes and of different ages (1:5 years).

The examined animals were classified into two groups.

Group I: Anatomical study was performed to identify the vascular pattern of the gracilis muscle in five dogs.

Group II (Free muscle transplantation); in this group, the gracilis muscle flap was transplanted in 40 dogs either orthotopic or heterotopic.

The transplanted gracilis muscles were evaluated clinically, histopathologically and postmortum angiography.

The study proved that, gracilis muscle is considered one of the most suitable free muscle flaps in dogs.

This is based on its superficial location and its supply with major pedicle and minor pedicle.
