Adiponectin and its association with metabolic syndrome in children

Background : adiponectin is the most abundantly expressed adipocyte in adipose tissue.

Low plasma adiponectin levels are predictive of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in adults.

Moreover, children with type 2 diabetes have significantly lower adiponectin levels, compared with their norm glycemic counterparts.

Thus, it is thought that low levels of circulating adiponectin may be an early marker of metabolic disease risk in children.

Aims : to investigate the relationship between serum adiponectin level and the metabolic syndrome phenotype in children and to examine the independent association between serum adiponectin level and the individual components of the metabolic syndrome.

Methods : the study included 72 obese children with body mass indie 95, h percentile for age and sex.

They were classified into 2 groups : obese children with the metabolic syndrome and those without the metabolic syndrome.

The main outcome measure was serum adiponectin level.

Results: obese children with the metabolic syndrome have a significantly lower adiponectin level compared to obese children without the metabolic syndrome (5.92+ 1.9ug / dl vs.

8.57 + 2.1 ug / dl).

There was a significant negative correlation between adiponectin level and waist circumference, triglyceride level, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose.

Adiponectin level correlated positively with the level *of HDL:C After Controlling for the confounding effect of age, sex, and visceral fat, adiponectin level remained a significant predictor of the metabolic syndrome (OR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.63-0.91).

Conclusion : adiponectin level is well associated with the metabolic syndrome.

In particular, adiponectin demonstrated a consistent relation to each metabolic syndrome component.

Adiponectin is a substantial key molecule in the development of metabolic syndrome and may be a comprehensive marker of the metabolic syndrome condition.

Measuring the plasma concentration of adiponectin may be useful for management ofmetabolic syndrome.
