Smoking habits among students of college of health and medical technologies

Objective : To determine the prevalence of smoking habits in college of health and medical technologies.

Methodology : A retrospective study.

Results : the prevalence of smoking was 20.6 % in college of health and medical technology during the period of the study.

Higher percentage in the age group 20-29 and lower percentage in the age group 40-49.

The percentages of smoker males higher than females.

Higher percentages of smokers smoked 11-20 cigarettes per day and lower number smoked ≥ 31 cigarette per day.

Stress relief and self enjoyment were the main reasons given by the students for starting smoking.

Both smokers and non smokers have a good knowledge about smoking related diseases and its complications Recommendations : Depending on findings as they are illustrated by this study, we recommend that a comprehensive and prompt smoking cessation program can be started at primary and secondary schools, and the colleges under the supervision of both social and scientific figures to ensure the implementation of this program.
