Utilization of ultrasound imaging for diagnosis of fracture nasal bone

Background: Nasal fracture is the most common mid-facial fracture.

Radiology is not usually helpful while ultrasonography is superior to conventional radiology.

The aim of this study is to evaluate Ultrasonography as a diagnostic tool for nasal bone fractures. Methods: A prospective, double-blinded, case control study was done in 184 patients with clinical manifestations of a fractured nasal bone as a study group while the same number from normal volunteers as a control group.

X-ray lateral nasal view and ultrasonography examination to the nasal bones was done with analysis of the radiographic images by three expert consultants without knowledge of the subject clinical data or examination. Results: Ultrasonography sensitivity was (97.74%) and specificity was (98.52%), while X-ray sensitivity was (74.38%) and specificity was (87.79%) in diagnosis of fracture nasal bone.

Conclusion: We found that ultrasonography is superior to conventional X-ray.

We believe that ultrasonography can be a useful tool for the diagnosis of nasal fractures.
