Formulation and quality control of effervescent tablets from ammi visnaga extract

The aim of this study was to formulate a crude extract of Ammi visnaga into a modern pharmaceutical dosage form.

Ammi visnaga has many traditional uses all over the Sudan, e.g.

the drug is used for the relief of renal colic and to ease the repulsion of renal stones.

In the present study, a powder triturate combining ethanolic extract of Ammi visnaga with lactose monohydrate was used.

Effervescent tablets each weighs 1.5g and contains about 15 mg of the total chromones calculated as khellin were prepared using two different methods, the method 1 direct compression and method 2 dry granulation.

The tablets were tested for: uniformity of weight, uniformity of drug content, tablet dissolution time, tablet hardness, and friability.

The tablets prepared by the method 1 showed better results concerning the weight uniformity and dissolution time, while, those of the method 2 were superior in uniformity of drug content and friability tests.
