Review of partial liver resection at king hussein medical center

Objective: to evaluate the experience of King Hussein Medical Center in using partial liver resection as a treatment option for benign and malignant liver lesions.

Methods : this is a retrospective review for 49 patients who underwent partial liver resection between February 2004 To March 2009 at King Hussein Medical Center.

Results : Forty nine patients underwent liver resection during the study period with a mean age of 48 years (range 20-77 years).

The main indications for liver resection were metastatic colo-rectal carcinoma and hepatic hemangioma, with 25 and 12 patients, respectively.

Ten patients (20.4 %) underwent Left hemihepatectomy, 8 patients (16, 3 %) underwent Right hemihepatectomy, 12 patients (24.5 %) underwent bisegmentectomies and 19 patients (38.8%) underwent single segmentectomy.

Average blood transfusion was 3.1 units.

Overall morbidity was 26.5 %.

Major complications occurred in 8.2 %.

Operative mortality was 2 % and median hospital stay was 9.6 days.

Conclusion : partial liver resection is well established, safe and effective procedure in the treatment of benign and malignant liver lesions at King Hussein Medical Center.

The most common indication for this procedure at our center is for metastatic tumor from a colo-rectal primary.

A prospective study and a long follow up period would be preferable to see the outcome of these procedures in relation to late complications, survival rate and recurrence rate.
