Risk factors in progression of chronic renal disease

Background: Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) is a progressive disease.

Progression of CRF depends on many risk factors, but clinically the most important are proteinuria and hypertension.

Aims: The aim of the present study was to analyze the risk factors for progression of chronic renal disease by evaluating statistical links between the decline in renal function and the different qualitative and quantitative factors and to analyze the efficacy of therapeutic interventions with renoprotective drugs on the progression of CRF in an unselected group of children.

Methods: This study was carried out on 35 children of both sexes and different ages, from already diagnosed as chronic renal failure cases.

Patients were divided into two groups according to the severity and progression of CRF as judged by 6FR.

In each group records of clinical assessment, anthropometric measurements, biochemical analyses, ultrasonographic measurements and treatment were made.

Results: Patients with progression of CRF were older, grew faster, had higher blood pressure, and were more often proteinuric.

A tendency for higher blood pressure values was quite constant.

Conclusion: it seems that patients who are hypertensive at the start of observation will follow a progressive course of CRF, their blood pressure will be much more difficult to control, and they will need many more antihypertensive drugs.

We recommended early initiation of renoprotective therapy and also a bigger sample for accurate results.
