Crack length effect on the fracture toughness of a finite width plate

The exact solutions of the problems related to fracture mechanics are limited to a few special configurations because it is very difficult or it does not exist, so this work is concerned with the study of fracture mechanics using general-purpose finite element software (ANSYS).

A crack was made in a plate of AL-Alloys with different crack lengths.

Fracture toughness of the material can be determined by calculating the stress intensity factor (SIF) for the different crack lengths.

SIF is determined using displacement extrapolation and J-integral methods.

The results show that the fracture toughness is decreased with increasing crack length.
