الملخص EN

This study was performed to determine the sero-prevalence rate, biochemical and histopathologically changes of naturally infected camels with hydatid cysts.

For this purpose, 240 camels of different ages were examined in Benha abattoir along the year 2008.

(PM) examination showed that, 7.5 % of the examined camels were infected with hydatid cysts.

While, the hydatid cyst antibodies against purified hydatid cyst fluid antigen by ELISA were detected in 10 sera of 50 pre-slaughtered camels, 18 PM positive camels and 2 out of 20 PM negative sera with sensitivity 100 % and specificity 90 %.

Hematological analysis showed significant increase in leucocyte count, neutrophils and eosinophil's while the other hierograms are non-significant.

The biochemical analysis of sera of infected camels showed that, significant increase in total protein, globulin, AST, ALT and bilirubin in comparison to the non-infected control.

Significant decrease in albumin, glucose, calcium and inorganic phosphorus were observed.

No alteration was observed in serum cholesterol, urea, uric acid, cretonne, magnesium, sodium and potassium levels of infected camel with hydatid cysts.

Pathological examination of the naturally infected livers and lungs with hydatid cysts revealed the presence of single or multiple hydatid cysts scattered throughout the hepatic and pulmonary tissues.

Hydatid cysts were composed of an outer thick laminated layer and inner germinal layer with viable and necrotic protoscolices.

The cysts were surrounded by a fibrous capsule with accumulation of inflammatory cells mainly epithelioid cells, lymphocytes and plasma cells.

Vascular and fatty changes of hepatic cells with mononuclear inflammatory cellular aggregation were observed.
