Pudendal nerve blockage : surgical and topographical anatom ical study in goat

This study was aimed to investigate the topographical anatomy of Pudendal nerve including; its origin, course and distribution as well as description of the procedures required for blocking of this nerve in goat.

Four formalized goats (two males and two females) in addition to six clinically healthy native bread goats (three males and three females) were used.

Topographical investigations and dissections were demonstrated that the pudendal nerve in the goat originates from ventral branches of the second, third and fourth sacral nerve.

The pudendal nerve was blocked in oblique mannar, 2 cm dorsomedial to the ischial tuberosity with an equal distance lateral to the anus on right and left side.

The local analgesic was injected subcutaneously and subfascially using 2% xylocaine Hcl.

The needle was inserted 2 cm deeper.

The superficial perineal branch of pudendal nerve was also blocked in male goat; the needle was inserted about 0.5 cm lateral to the anus on both sides subcutaneously.

In female goat the distal cutaneous branch of pudendal nerve was blocked at the ischiorectal fossa.

The needle was then inserted 0.5-1 cm lateral to the anus on both sides subcutaneously.

Complete desensitization in addition to motor paralysis was obtained, leading to relaxation of retractor penis muscle in the male goat which indicated by exposure and desensitization of the penis with its sigmoid flexure.

Analgesia was also obtained in the perineal region of female goat, including vulva, vagina, and anus.

It is therefore concluded that blocking of the pudendal nerve on both right and left sides (a double blocking technique) dorsomedial to the ischial tuberosity is a useful anaesthetic procedures for manipulative and surgical interventions including the penis, prepuce, urethra, and sigmoid flexure.
