Information technology skills of Jordanian teachers and the degree to which they apply these skills in their teaching

The aim of this work is to assess teachers' ICT ability levels and the degree to which they integrated ICT skills in their teaching.

To achieve the aims a questionnaire consisting of four broad ICT areas was developed.

These ICT areas include instructional software use; information literacy skills; modification of instructional delivery; and assessment of student performance.

The questionnaire was administered to a stratified clustered random sample of (820) teachers from two educational directorates in the northern region of Jordan.

The sample consisted of teachers of various subjects, which includes physical education, pre-vocational education, math, English language, science, and Arabic, teaching in Jordanian schools.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a random sample of (44) teachers to supplement the results from the questionnaire and to gain a deeper insight into the status of ICT at schools.

Results from the questionnaire showed that teachers' ICT ability level, as well as the degree to which they had integrated ICT into instruction, fell in the medium category.

Inhibiting factors obtained from the interviews were discussed.

The study also identified teachers' perceived training needs in terms of the development of ICT skills and knowledge.

Teachers' priorities for training fell into the need for skills and knowledge relating to the application of ICT within a professional-context "tradition to Technical skills.

Recommendations were made regarding the development and implementation of ICT-related training programmes adapted to the specific needs of teachers.
