Variations of English Language learning strategy use within five spheres

The purpose of this article is to describe the findings of a study designed to investigate English language learning strategies employed by Jordanian secondary school students in and out of the classroom within five spheres, namely: i) Performance (poor, average, good); ii) school location (rural, urban); iii) school type (public, private); iv) gender (male, female); and v) streaming (scientific, literary, vocational).

Data for the study were collected using a self-reported questionnaire adapted from Mohamed Amin Embi (2000) consisting of three parts.

Part A is made up of 20 items about class language learning strategies (CLLS); Part B, is made up of 40 items about out-of-class language learning strategies (OLLS); while Part C consists of variables which form the spheres within which CLLS and OLLS are investigated.

The subjects of the study consisted of 215 students from ten secondary schools in Irbid Governorate, Jordan.

The data were analyzed using a one-way ANO-VA (significance level a£0.05 to find out variations of the language learning strategies (LLS) within the five spheres.

The findings showed significant variations between the students' use of English language learning strategies and their language performance, gender, streaming, school location, and school type.
