Epidemiological view of ENT diseases in patients at a private clinic, Aden

Objective : This study was done to find out the frequency and pattern of ENT diseases among patients seen at a private clinic.

Material and methods : This is a retrospective study based on 362 patients records obtained from a private clinic, in Almansorah, Aden.

All these patients were examined and treated at the ENT clinic, during June and July 2007.

The results are expressed in numbers and percentages.

Results : Out of 362 patients, 51.1% were males and 48.9% females.

The ratio of males to females was 1.04 : 1.

The age of the patients ranged between 2 and 80 years, with the mean age 25.3 ± 16.6 years.

The majority of patients were in the age < 10 year and 29 years (66.9%).

Of those, sixty five (18%) were below the age of ten years, while 120 (33.1%) were ≥ 30 years of age.

The difference between age groups was not statistically significant (P = 0.070).

94.8% of the patients were from Aden and from the neighboring southern governorates.

The most common ENT diseases were chronic tonsillitis (16.6%), followed by allergic rhinitis (15.2%), chronic pharyngitis (9.4%), chronic otitis media (8%) and otitis externa (7.2%).

Overall, ear diseases were presented in 39.2% patients, while allergic rhinitis and acute rhinitis were presented in (19.1%) of the patients.

Conclusion : Ear diseases and both allergic and acute rhinitis were accounted for (58.3%) among patients living in a hot and humid areas in the southern governorates of Yemen.
