Background : Twin pregnancy is associated with greater risks for both mother and fetuses, compared to singleton pregnancy (1, 2).

It accounts for > 10% of all perinatal deaths.

Prematurity is the largest contributor to twin morbidity and mortality.

Objectives : We aim to highlight the incidence, the demographic characteristics and outcomes of twin pregnancy in Al – Wahda Teaching Hospital.

Patients and methods : All twin deliveries of more than 20-week gestation were included.

Data were collected directly from the patients, their relatives, and their case sheets.

Confidence Interval of 95% and P-values of < 0.05 were considered as statistically significant.

Results : 150 women with twin pregnancy had delivered, representing an incidence of 1.55%, mean maternal age of 28.5 ± 6.0 years, and mean parity of 2.6 ± 2.4.

Advancing maternal age, family history from maternal side and previous history of twinning were the most frequent factors.

The antenatal and postnatal complications were more emerged among antenatal care non-users.

The most common and serious maternal complications were preterm delivery (52%) and postpartum hemorrhage (44%).

Babies delivered from mothers using antenatal care were heavier.

The perinatal mortality rate for twins was 263.3 / 1000 twin deliveries.

In conclusion, twin pregnancy is a high-risk pregnancy, associated with increased maternal morbidity and fetal mortality.
