Pattern of brain tumors in Southern governorates of Yemen

Primary tumors of CNS account for approximately 9 % of all primary tumors excluding skin tumors.

The age specific incidence rate for CNS tumors is clearly bimodal showing an early peak in children under 10 years of age , then generally a rise to give a broader peak in the 5th and 6th decades of age .

The causative factors involved in the pathogenesis of CNS tumors are similar to those concerning the development of neoplasm else where in the body.

Aim of study : The aim of study is to determine the pattern of CNS tumors at southern governorates and to evaluate the criteria for grading of astrocytic tumors.

Methodology : Ninety eight cases were selected by reviewing all the request forms from Aden hospitals and registered in Aden cancer registry using Canreg 4 data base, the data was revised and classified into different variable and analyzed using software computer program (SPSS version 11(.

Results : A total number of 98 cases of CNS tumors were reported during the period 1997-2002.

Most of them were males with male to female ratio 1.5:1 and most of them from Aden governorate 53 (54.1 %) cases.

The most age adjusted groups were the adult age group between (30-39 ) 21 (21.4 %) followed by childhood with histological type.

Astrocytic tumors is the most common histologically verified tumors 24 (24.5 %( followed by mixed glioma 13(13.3 %).

Medulloblstoma is the most common childhood tumors represent 9.2 %of all tumors and (27.27 %) of childhood tumor Conclusion : A significant increase in annul reporting cases was noticed without significant changes in histological pattern of CNS tumors.

Still the clinical and radiological image studies are the most common ways for diagnosis of CNS tumors in Aden hospitals.
