Cardiovascular complications among diabetic patients admitted to al-Gamhouria Teaching Hospital

Objectives : To analyze the frequency of cardiovascular complications among diabetic patients admitted to Al-Gamhouria Teaching Hospital.

Methods : This is a prospective, descriptive study that involved all diabetic patients with cardiovascular diseases (chronic ischemic heart disease, acute myocardial infarction and heart failure) those have been admitted to the medical department at Al-Gamhouria Teaching Hospital (AGTH) during the period from 1st January to 30th June 2005.

Patient’s age, sex, type and duration of diabetes, degree of blood glucose control, presence of arterial hypertension, and dyslipidemia were recorded.

Results : A total of 198 diabetic patients were admitted to the medical unit, 79 (39.9 %) of them were having cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

Cardiovascular complication was the most frequent macrovascular complication among the admitted diabetic patients.

Cardiovascular complication was more frequent among male patients with a male to female ratio of 1.3:1.The age of patients ranged from 42-85 years with a mean of 58.15± 12.86 years.

The majority of patients aged ≥ 50 years (89.9 %), and all of them had type 2 diabetes (100.0 %).

49.3 % of the patients with CVD were having diabetes for ≥ 10years.

Arterial hypertension (AHT) was present in 50.6 % of cases while the majority of patients had poor glycemic control (81 %) and dyslipidemia was present in 54.3 % Conclusion : Cardiovascular diseases are the most frequent macrovascular complication among diabetic patients admitted to the medical unit.

Diabetic patients with cardiovascular diseases have high frequency of poor glycemic control, dyslipidemia and arterial hypertension.
