The usefulness of voltarene retard in the management of pain and spasm of masseter and temporalis muscles in patients with functional disorders of masticatory disturbances : clinical trails

Aims of the study.

Myofascial pain of the masticatory system is a syndrome of multifactorial etiology, and hence treatment modalities.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent is one of these modalities, with contradictory effectiveness.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Voltaren retard on pain and spasm of masseter and temporalis muscle.

Patients and Methods Fifty patients with masticatory muscle pain were selected from patients enrolled for treatment of functional disordered of TMG.

Twenty five patients received Voltaren retard 100 mg / day, the other 25 received placebo.

Pain assessment was done by the use of visual analogue scale.

Calculation of trigger areas in masseter and temporalis muscle was done to determine muscle spasm severity.

The assessment was done before and after treatment.

Results.

Voltaren retard and placebo have similar effects on myofascial pain.

Voltaren retard was significantly more effective than placebo in reducing the number of muscle trigger areas.

Conclusions Voltaren retard is effective in treating myofascial pain and spasm in patients with functional disorders of TMJ.
