This paper presents the use of fuzzy logic control (FLC) to adjust the firing angle of the thyristor converter bridge that controlled the speed of DC motor.

The FLC performs a PD-like control strategy.

It gives the angle reference variation of the thyristor converter bridge based on the current error and the derivative of the output current.

Also, it performs a PID-like control strategy, giving the current reference based on the speed error, the integral of the speed error and the derivative of the output speed.

The performance of the drive system was evaluated through the toolbox Simulink of Matlab program.

The results showed that the FLC has a good accuracy and performed well for the armature current and the speed control of the DC motor.

Also it has provided a good time response.
