الملخص EN

The present study was carried out on users of contraceptive methods provided by one family planning clinic in Basrah City.

The study involved estimation of the annual workload based on total visitors during 2000, in addition to a sample study on 230 women of the users of injectable hormone (Depoprovera) during the period June to September 2001.

The study revealed that a substantial proportion of women were seeking family planning services but mainly to limit or space their pregnancies and for economic reasons.

Availability of a particular contraceptive method is crucial to the choice of mothers but a good proportion of users of injectable hormones reported to prefer them for perceived safety, practicability, to avoid interruption of supply of pills and for medical reasons.

The majority of users of injectable hormones, however, decided to give up the use of the method because of unwanted menstrual disorders such as bleeding and amenorrhoea.
