The antibacterial and antioxidant activities of ethanolic (EtOH) seed extracts of Nigella sativa (Nigella) and Pimpinella anisum (Anise) plants were investigated in this study.

The extracts were tested separately against an isolates of Gram negative bacteria Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and a Gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923). The ethanolic plant seed extracts showed variable effect on the growth of the tested strains with an increase in growth inhibition of 13 to 16 mm clear zone.

The antibacterial activity against the tested strains was exhibited with both extracts but of higher degree achieved by Pimpinella anisum plant seed extract.

The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for EtOH plant seed extracts of Nigella sativa was 0.5 mg / ml on Staphylococcus aureus and 0.7mg / ml on Escherichia coli, while, The Pimpinella anisums plant seeds extract showed an effect of 0.8 mg / ml on both strains.

The antioxidant activity of the two plant seed extracts was tested by the FRAP method showed that Pimpinella anisums extract had higher activity of 2.53 mM / g dry matter than Nigella sativa of 0.26 mM / g dry matter.
