الملخص الإنجليزي

Experimental asthma was induced in both rats and guinea pigs animal models by sensitization with ovalbumin.

The animals were divided into three groups.

The first received only saline as a control, in the second was induced with experimental asthma while in the third group was also induced with asthma but animals received early treatment of herbal extract during sensitization.

This extract was prepared from five plants mixed at the following ratio : (25 % Inula viscosa leaves, 20 % Nigella saliva seeds, 15 % Foeniculum vulgare seeds, 20 % Pimpinella anisum seeds and 20 % Matricaria retutica leaves).

The asthmatic group of both animal models showed characteristic hematological and histopathologically changes from the control group.

The hematological changes were detected in blood and BALF.

The abnormal changes in blood were mainly associated with an increase in eosinophils.

However, the abnormality in BALF was more extensive and linked with cellular increase in total RBCs, WBCs, eosinophils and neutrophils count.

The histopatho-logical changes in asthmatic animals were in alignment with hematological abnormalities, and involved structural alteration in the trachea as well as the alveoli of the pulmonary airways.

Both animal models exhibited characteristic thickening of the trachea lamina proporia due to extensive invasion of inflammatory cells.

The rats showed trachea loss of epithelia mucosa while the trachea epithelia in guinea pigs were enriched with mast cells.

The structural alterations in alveoli mainly involved per bronchial inflammation as well as bronchoconstriction and occasional appearance of mucus.

The histopathologically changes of asthma in rats were more extensive than guinea pigs model.

Furthermore, the airway structural changes in chronic asthmatic were more severe than acute asthmatic rats.

The herbal treatment with the mixture of five plants managed to protect both animal models almost completely from the hematological and histopathologically abnormalities.

The improvement by herbal treatment was achieved irrespective of the asthma severity.

However, the nebulization route proved to be more effective herbal treatment than intraperitoneal injection.
