الملخص الإنجليزي

Wala Dam was built on the Wadi Wala stream flow 40Km south of Amman and about 26 Km to the east of the Dead Sea to store winter flood flows and recharge the Wadi as Sir Limestone aquifer.

The original idea presented by the consultant of the dam project, was to implement artificial recharge via 8 recharge wells.

But during the first year the reservoir was in use, it was noticed that the groundwater head had been raised without the need for artificial recharge.

The only explanation is the natural recharge from the reservoir into the groundwater aquifer.

From this explanation the present study provides further research.

In this thesis, a simulation model is presented to investigate the interaction between the surface water reservoir behind Wala dam and the groundwater aquifer in the area.

Mod flow software with the RES package is used with available data to calibrate the required parameters.

These have been done for both steady and transient groundwater flow.

Transmissivity ranges from 177 m /day to 30193m / day in the domain of the simulation.

The aquifer specific storage is 1.51979 *10"5 m"1 and the specific yield equal 0.15827.

The equivalent vertical conductivity of the reservoir bed is 0.252 m/day.

Verification processes have proved that the present simulation can be extended for future prediction.

A number of scenarios have been presented to predict the quantity of the water that can be pumped form Heidan pumping wells.

The rate of pumping can be raised to approximately five times the present rate.

The crucial conclusion from this study is that the natural groundwater recharge from Wala Dam reservoir is beneficial in sufficient quantities to be pumped downstream from Heidan wells.
