الملخص الإنجليزي

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between starting age and reading proficiency in foreign language learning at the end of the high school.

A total of 40 Jordanian 12th grade students from Prince Al Hassan Secondary School in Karak were included in the study.

The students were divided into two groups, the first group consisted of 20 students from those who started learning English in the first grade, whereas the second group also consisted of 20 students from those who started learning English in the 5' grade.

Two reading comprehension tests were administered to both groups.

Then the t-test for independent samples was used to check if there were any statistical differences in the performance of the students.

Results showed that there is no systematic relationship between starting age and reading proficiency in foreign language learning.

Earlier starting age appeared to have very little effect toward increasing reading proficiency in the learning of English.

The results of this study indicate that learning English at an early age (at the first grade) at school has little effect on their reading proficiency in English.
