الملخص الإنجليزي

The objective of the study was to determine the heavy metals in street dusts of Ma'an area, Jordan.

In order to achieve this aim, street dust samples were collected from 24 sites during summer season of 2005.

It was found that the average level of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn in street dust was 4.8, 35.5, 3539.4, 171.9, 71.2 and 311.2 mg / kg, respectively.

The Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn had elevated levels in street dust samples comparing with that for background samples, whereas, the levels of Fe and Mn were higher in background samples.

Cd levels in railway station were higher than other sampling sites and the educational center have a lower contaminates.

The chemical fractionation showed that Fe-Mn oxides was a major sink for Cd, Mn and Pb (72.3, 51.0 and 52.7 %, respectively) in street dust samples as well as Cu showed an ability to attract to organic fraction (35.2 %), whereas, Zn had an ability to attract to both Fe-Mn oxides and organic phases (31.5 and 27.6 %, respectively The major anions (F-, Cl-, Br-, NO3-, PO43- and SO42-) PO4, were analyzed by ion exchange chromatography.

While cations (Na+, K+ and Ca2+) was analyzed by flame photometer and Mg2+ was determined by EDTA titration.

It was found that these anions and cations except (Br- and PO43-) were the major components for dust samples and the high level of these species was mostly due to natural background soil.

The mineralogy composition and physicochemical properties (Ph, moisture content, organic matter content, electrical conductivity, carbonate content and cation exchange capacity) were determined for street dusts.

Enrichment factor, mobility factor and correlations were evaluated for heavy metals.

The accuracy of results for heavy metals were examined by analysis of standard reference material.
