الملخص الإنجليزي

-The biodegradation of chlorobenzoic compounds was investigated by using Acinetobacter calcoaceticus bacteria which was isolated from Petra wastewater plant and it used chlorobenzoic compounds as sole carbon and energy source.

The rates of biodegradation of chlorobenzoic compounds by A.

calcoaceticus was studied in minimal salt media (MSM), These rates were for CBAs 4mM (45, 95, 36 and 35 μM/h), 3mM(45, 70, 13 and 15 μM/h), 2mM (49.5, 55, 10 and 10 μM/h) for 2-CBA, 3-CBA, 4- CBA and 3, 4-CBA respectively.

2-CBA was used in the further experiments because the 2-CBA is the most toxic one among these compounds were tested, the experiments were included substrate concentration, temperature, pH, inoculum size, carbon starvation, carbon adaptation, carbon and nitrogen sources .The preferential temperature and pH for the strain were 37ºC and 7, respectively.

The carbon sources lactose, maltose and sucrose led to the decrease of the 2-CBA biodegradation, and the simultaneous addition of sorbitol and fructose caused complete degradation of 2-CBA within 70 h incubation.

Nitrogen sources supplied (yeast extract, L-prolin, casein and trypton) caused a repression in 2-CBA degradation.

The different glucose concentrations tested resulted in the inhibition of the three 2-CBA degradation parameters (cell mass, biodegradation and chloride production).

Catechol 1,2 dioxygenase activity was found to be present in cell free extracts suggesting that 2-CBA, 3-CBA, 4-CBA and 3.4-CBA is catabolized by ortho-ring cleavage pathway.
