الملخص الإنجليزي

-This study aimed at exploring the most common teaching vocabulary strategies used by EFL teachers in Tabouk District.

It also tried to find the connection between the various applied vocabulary strategies by the teachers due to their qualifications and their experience; besides it attempted to present the difficulties that face EFL teachers and presented suggestions to improve the vocabulary teaching.

To achieve the purpose of the study, the researcher designed a 45 Likert - type item questionnaire and a two–open ended question related to the difficulties and suggestions to improve the vocabulary teaching.

The study sample consisted of 250 teachers whom were all the Saudi EFL teachers who teach English for the basic stage in Tabouk District during the academic year 2006/2007.

The study attempted to answer the following questions: 1) What are the most common vocabulary teaching strategies that are used at the basic stage by EFL Saudi teachers? (2) Are there any statistical significant differences among teachers in their applications of vocabulary strategies due to their qualification? (3) Are there any statistical significant differences among teachers in their applications of vocabulary strategies due to their teaching experiences? (4) What are the difficulties that EFL teachers face in teaching vocabulary? (5) What are the EFL teachers’ suggestions to improve the procedures of teaching vocabulary? The respondents’ responses to the questionnaire were computed and analyzed using the SPSS program using: means, standard deviations, percentages, Cronbach Alpha, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).

The results of the study showed that the most common strategies used were: using visual Aids, Context, Definition, Combination of strategies, Word listing, Semantic-Field, Categorization, Guessing and Translation, respectively.

The results of the study, also, revealed that there were statistically significant differences (α=0.05) in using different strategies due to the qualification and there were no significant differences at (α=0.05) in using different strategies in teaching vocabulary due to the years of experience.

In the light of the results of the study, a set of suggestions and recommendations was stated to curriculum designers and to the concerned official staff in the Ministry of Education.
