الملخص الإنجليزي

-The main purpose of this study is to collect as many loan words and expressions used in the area of Western Amman (WA) Jordan as possible, and to find out what semantic changes these loans have undergone. The data obtained are drawn from a questionnaire, interviews and observations.

The researcher has collected more than 470 loanwords and 240 loan expressions and the findings of the study are as follows: 1.

The meanings of many of these loanwords used in WA have undergone serious changes; therefore, they have drifted from their original meanings. 2.

These changes in meaning are described under seven categories of semantic change (namely: Specialization, generalization, abstraction, concretion, elevation, degeneration and completely different); loans which haven't undergone any difference in meaning are classified under an additional eighth category (namely: no difference). 3.

The loan expressions collected have undergone no obvious change in meaning. 4.

Most of the loan words and expressions used in WA are English. However, a few of the loanwords found in WA are French.

None of the loan expressions are French. 5.

Social reasons, skilled English speakers and the need to fill semantic gaps in the Arabic language in some fields such as technology, science and new innovations are the main reasons behind the use of these loans. 6.

These loans have affected Jordanian colloquial Arabic by introducing new sounds, new words and even new expressions. 7.

Changes in meanings of loanwords may cause serious misunderstandings between Jordanian monolingual Arabic speakers and English native speakers in some cases. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher recommends doing more specialized study in order to cover all aspects of the English loan expressions used in WA.
