الملخص الإنجليزي

-The present study is an attempt to figure out the impact of the linguistic globalization of English on the linguistic choices in the new written technology of communication, such as SMS and E-mail messages. Moreover, it investigates the role of the social and the academic motivations as well as the role of the technical constraints on the linguistic choices in these modes of communication, which have become effective in the age of globalization. The importance of this study springs out from the fact that most of the previous works have focused on the effect of globalization on the spoken language, whereas this study aims to fill a gap in the research by focusing on the written language rather than spoken in these new technologies of communication.

To obtain the data of this study, the researcher has developed a questionnaire which was distributed to 200 students at Mu’tah University.

The following results are highlighted: 1.

The Arabic language is no longer the only possible linguistic choice in writing SMS and E-mail messages, university students show a tendency to use English and to code-switch between Romanized Jordanian Arabic (RJA) and English. 2.

Globalization has a major role in the invention of the Romanized Arabic (RA). 3.

Globalization has a major role in the use of English in writing the SMS and E-mail messages. 4.

Social and academic motivations encourage the students to code-switch between English and RJA in writing SMS and E-mail messages. 5.

Technical constraints force the students to use English or to code-switch between English and RJA. 6.

There is a statistical difference between science and non-science university students in terms of who uses English and code-switches more between RJA and English.

Science students are more extensive users of English and RJA in SMS and E-mail messages modes of communication. 7.

There is no statistical significant difference between females and males at the level of who use English more.

But it’s found that females tend to code-switch more between Romanized Jordanian Arabic and English than males do.
