الملخص الإنجليزي

Methanol (MeOH) and ethanol (EtOH) extracts of eleven plants Selected from South Jordan were tested for their antifungal and antioxidant Effects.

The antifungal effect of the following plants : Mellitus indicus, Paronchia argentea, Artemisia seiberi, Arum hygrophyllum, Achillea fragrantissima, Foeniculum vulgare, Sarcopterum spinosum, Citrullus colocynthis, Peganum harmala, Teucrium polium and Matricaria aurea extracts were tested on four fungi isolates : Penicillium chrysogenum, Aspergillus nigar, Aspergillus nidulans and Candida albicans.

The antifungal effect of these plant extracts was noticed with the extracts of Sarcopterum spinosum L (S.

spinosum), Artemisia seiberi (A.

seiberi) and Achillea fragrantissima (A.

fragrantissima).

The effect of plant extracts appear as the concentration of plant extracts increase.

The minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) for MeOH plant extracts was about 7-9 mg / ml for S.

spinosum, 7-10 mg / ml for A.

fragrantissima and 8-10 mg / ml for A.

seiberi, against four fungi isolates.

But in MFC for EtOH plant extracts was found between 7- 9 mg / ml for S.

spinosum, 10-9 mg / ml for A.

fragrantissima and between 9-10 mg / ml for A.seiberi, against four fungi isolates.

The highest antioxidant activity was noticed with S.

spinosum plant extract by two methods: The 2, 2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6- sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radical cation decolorization assay method (IC50 3.

1 μg / ml for EtOH extracts and IC50 7.6μg / ml for MeOH extracts) and by The Ferric Reducing / Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay (4663.33μM ferrous mg plant extraction for EtOH extract and 4207.33μM ferrous / mg plant extraction for MeOH extract).

However the lowest antioxidant plant activity was appear with Peganum harmala (P.

harmala) by using two methods ABTS radical cation decolorization assay (IC50 188.2 μg / ml for EtOH and (IC50 239.6 μ g / ml for MeOH) and by FRAP assay 235.8μM ferrous /mg plant extraction for EtOH extract and 267.3 μM ferrous / mg plant extraction for MeOH extract).

However S.

spinosum MeOH and EtOH extracts have the strongest antifungal antioxidant effects among eleven plants selected from South Jordan and tested for their antifungal as well as antioxidant effect.
