الملخص الإنجليزي

The total phenolic contents and antioxidant capacity of the methanol and aqueous extracts of different parts of 21 medicinal plant and spices were investigated.

The total phenolics were measured by Folin-Ciocalteau Assay and expressed as Gallic acid equivalent (GAE) mg / g of dry weight (DW).

The total antioxidant capacity was estimated by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,20-azinobis-3 ’ sulphonic acid (ABTS) assays and expressed as trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) mg / g dry wt (DW). The total phenolic content of plant aqueous extracts ranged from 3.0 to 98.0 GAE mg / g while in methanol ranged from 6.6 to 103.0 GAE mg / g.

The mean values of DPPH-TEAC were varied from 4.1 to 365.0 mg / g in methanol extracts versus 2.7 to 267.0 mg / g in aqueous extracts.

Moreover the ABTS-TEAC mean values were varied from 6.1 to 347.0 mg / g in methanol extracts, versus 4.2 to 243.0 mg / g in aqueous extracts.

According to their antioxidant capacity, the plant extracts can be divided in to three categories : high, moderate and low antioxidant plants.

A correlation between radical scavenging capacities of extracts with total phenolic content was observed. The plant with highest antioxidant activity was Punica garntum peel.

Since the peel methanoilc extract contained the highest phenol content.

The antioxidant effect of methanol extract of punica garntum was studied in strepozotocin-induced diabetic rat.

intraperitorium administration of punica garntum peel extract (10 and 20 mg / kg body weight) for 28 days resulted in a significant reduction of malon dialdehyde (MDA) ; the lipid peroxide marker; in liver, kidney, RBC and plasma.

The extract also causes either a significant enhance or maintain the activities of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione-s-transferase and glutathione reductase) in the liver, kidneys and RBC of rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes.

These results clearly show the antioxidant property of punica garntum peel.

The effect of punica garntum at 20 mg / kg was more effective than 10 mg/kg of body weight.

The data of this study verify the correlation of total phenol to antioxidant capacity in vitro and in vivo methods.
