It may be important to have an idea about the sediment particle height in any stream, especially for purpose of designing and constructing intakes.

This study is an attempt to derive a theoretical expression for specific particle diameter height in an open channel.

It is proposed that the velocity gradient to be the basic factor affecting the process of particle lifting.

The difference in velocity gradient between the upper and the lower side of sediment particle was found to be a function of Rouse number and the dimensionless parameter (/), where is the nominal diameter of the sediment particle, is the depth of the flow and is the slope of the channel.

The derived expression is fitted to field data from a lined open channel of 90cm depth and 1m width located at north of Iraq, for different particles diameters and two channels of two different slopes.

It is seen that the turbulence has a little effect on lifting the coarse sediments, i.e.

sand and coarser than sand (≥ 1.0), but it may help to keep the particle in suspension.

The lifting of the coarse particles is made basically by the velocity gradient, which is given a function of the above two parameters.
