In this work, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method was used to prepare carbon nano tubes (CNTs) using five different catalysts (Ni-Sn), (Co.

Sn), (Fe2O3 .Sn), (NiO.

Sn) and (NiSO4.

6H2O) with two different substrates : ceramics tile and Alumina.

Acetylene gas was used as a carbon source and argon gas as carrier at 700 0C.

The parameters which affect CNTs production process were studied CNTs prepared by this work were used to prepare metal matrix composite reinforced by CNTs.

Mg-4Al matrix was prepared by powder metallurgy which was then reinforced with CNTs.

The effect of CNTs% on the mechanical, physical and thermal properties of metal matrix composite was studied Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize CNTs.

Density, porosity and specific heat and hardness were measured for metal matrix composite-CNTs %.

The results showed that catalysts Ni.Sn, Co.Sn, NiO.Sn and NiSO4.6H2O produced CNTs.

Fe2O3.Sn as a two-component type catalysts produced carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon Nano coils (CNCs).

Ni.Sn catalyst gave the highest CNTs yield.

TEM and SEM images showed that the carbon Nanocoils diameter (D = 30-60 nm) and the tube diameter (d= 11-14 nm).

For linear carbon Nanotube, the tube diameter is 14-122 nm and this is due to the micron size of catalyst powder used.

The results showed the specific heat capacity and hardness decrease with porosity level of the Nano composites increased, and the porosity level of the Nano composites increased with increasing the weight percentages of CNTs.
