The present work aimed at modifying the microstructure of (Mg-Al-Zn) alloy by using Friction Stir Processing Technique, to enhance mechanical properties, such as ultimate tensile strength, yield stress, elongation, and hardness.

The experiments were carried out by using different parameters of tool rotation speed (1000, 1250, 1600) rpm, and different traverse speeds (40, 60, 80) mm / min by using vertical milling machine and cylindrical-shouldered with threaded pin.

Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy investigations showed that FSP broke up and dispersed the coarse intermetallic phase (-Mg17Al12) and refine the microstructure of the processed surface.

Tensile tests showed that the yield strength of processed samples increased from (150.7) MPa for homogenized alloy to (337) MPa as traverse speed increased to (80 mm / min) with the same conditions.

The fracture strength of processed samples were increased, maximum fracture strength was observed of (695.88MPa) at tool rotation speed of 1600 rpm and traverse speed of (80) mm/min.

Compared with homogenized specimen of (281.7)MPa .

The increase in tool rotation speed has led to increase in the ductility (measured by percent elongation at fracture) at all traverse speeds, Vickers hardness results showed that the mean hardness of the processed samples increased with increasing the tool rotation speed & traverse speed, increased from 72.3 MPa for homogenized alloy to (78.3, 92.9, 112) MPa for the alloy processed at (1000, 1250.

1600) rpm respectively and (80) mm / min.
