الملخص الإنجليزي

The potentiality for phosphate recovery from anaerobic digested sewage sludge was investigated in this study.

When sludge produced from the activated sludge treatment processes with biological phosphorus removal is treated in anaerobic digesters, and then dewatered, the supernatant of this sludge shall be rich in phosphate, ammonium and sometimes magnesium ions.

These three components can combine to form striate which precipitates at certain conditions.

Striate is a phosphate mineral that can be used as a good fertilizer.

Striate precipitation is a well-known problem in wastewater treatment plants, especially at sludge anaerobic digestion equipment as it causes clogging in pumps and pipes.

However, controlled striate recovery can reduce these problems.

Many factors influence the precipitation of striate such as ion molar ratios, pH, etc.

In this study, a reactor consists of mixing tank and settling tank was designed and set up at the Royal Scientific Society to study striate precipitation.

Anaerobic sludge supernatant produced at As-Samra wastewater treatment plant was used in the experiments; the purpose was to assess the efficiency of the system in phosphorus / struvite recovery and the effect of three variable parameters (mixing time, mixing speed and settling time) on striate formation.

With fixing the pH value between 8.5 and 9, the efficiency of phosphorus removal achieved from experimental runs reached about 77 %.

Best efficiencies were obtained at high mixing speed (300 rpm), low mixing time (0.5 hour) and settling time in the range of 8-16 hours.

Efficiency was found to be directly proportional to mixing speed and inversely proportional to mixing time and settling time.

Other effects of the interaction between variable parameters on efficiency were studied using statistical analysis.

Striate formation was verified by X-ray Diffraction tests.

As-Samra WWTP was selected to perform this study as it is the largest wastewater treatment plant in Jordan and it faces the problem of striate accumulation.

Since its operational staff has the willing to find a feasible solution for striate problem, they were very cooperative and they provided in-kind support to achieve the objectives of this study.
