Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a collection of heterogeneous wireless nodes that communicate with each other without infrastructure.

It is distributed and does not require any centralized administration.

All nodes cooperate with each other in forming MANET, each node acts as host and router for forwarding packets from other nodes.

Ad hoc routing protocols can be classified mainly into proactive routing protocols and reactive routing protocols This work aims to design ad hoc routing protocol which is called Cross-Layer Ad Hoc Routing (CLAHR) protocol in the context of reactive routing protocols.

CLAHR protocol is used in multi hop wireless ad hoc networks and implements two important mechanisms which are Route Discovery Phase and Send Data Phase.

Two important problems are illustrated in CLAHR protocol.

The first problem is the broadcasting storm of the ROUTE REQUEST messages where a node sends a message to all other nodes in the network and generates many redundant transmissions, which may cause more serious broadcast storm problem in Route Discovery Phase.

The second problem is the link breakage between two transmitting nodes because of their mobility in Send Data Phase that cause the data to be lost when the transmission begins.

CLAHR protocol uses a cross-layer parameters from physical and network layers in order to solve these two problems.

The parameters of the network layer are combined with the parameters of the physical layer which include : movement speed of mobile node, radio transmission range of wireless network adapter and the signal strength of the nodes in the ad hoc network.

The obtained results concluded from building CLAHR protocol are : partial flooding of ROUTE REQUEST messages that give low routing overhead which is reduced to 22-34 % and very good link reliability compared to the DSR protocol and position-based ad hoc routing protocols.

The CLAHR is implemented by using Microsoft Visual Basic.Net 2008.
