This thesis investigates the use of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to perform image compression.

JPEG 2000 is the next generation image compression standard developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group.

It is superior to the original JPEG standard in terms of both performance and functionality.

The aim of this thesis is to provide modules written in the Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) that can be used to accelerate an existing software implementation of JPEG2000.

A presented VHDL implementation of JPEG2000 has been verified in simulation using Xilinx ISE 9.2i (Synthesis / Implementation) software.

The timing behavior of the designed system is analyzed by using Xilinx ISE 9.2i (Behavioral Simulation) software to verify that it meets the performance requirements.

The implementation of the designed system is achieved using Xilinx V irtex-II / xc2v40 platform as a suitable selected programmable device.

This design utilizes various techniques such as pipelining, parallel execution, data reusability and specific features of Xilinx V irtex-II FPGAs to accelerate the system.

This thesis introduces firstly a proposed method of computing one and two-dimensional wavelet transform .The proposed method reduces heavily processing time for decomposition of image keeping or overcoming the quality of reconstructed images.

Also, the inverse procedures of all the above transform for multi- dimensional cases verified.
