PVA/PVC composite HFNF membranes have been prepared and tested for aqueous solutions separation.

In the first stage, substrate PVC HF membranes were spun using dry/wet-phase inversion method.

Therefore, dope solutions with different PVC concentrations (15-19 wt.

%) have been formulated using dimethyl-acetamide (DMAC) as a solvent in order to investigate the effects of polymer concentration on morphology, structure and performance of HF membranes.

The results showed that the permeability of HF membranes increased with increasing PVC dope concentration up to 17 wt.

%, then the performance declined with increasing PVC dope concentration.

Pore size distribution was in narrow range as PVC concentration increased higher than 17 wt.

%, while porosity has decreased with increasing PVC concentration.

Also the mechanical properties have been enhanced with increasing PVC concentration.

Increasing PVC concentrations changed pore morphologies from large tear-type macro-voids to thin finger-type voids combined with spong-like element.

In the second stage, PVA/PVC composite HFNF membranes were prepared by dip-coating method.

Therefore, optimized HF membranes were coated with PVA solution for two times to determine its effects on morphology, structure and performance of HFNF membranes.

The results revealed that the permeability of HFNF membranes decreases with coating time, while the rejection increased with coating time.

Morphology, structure and stability of HF membranes have been determined using scanning electronic microscope (SEM), capillary flow porometer and mechanical properties test.

Finally, HF17 and HFNF 173 membrane showed good performance for UF and NF , respectively.
