الملخص الإنجليزي

The research aims to employ microwave remote sensing techniques to classify soil with the traditional classification method and to detect buried pipes in soil and compare the results. The three- band IKONOS image and the one band QUICK BIRD image for the study area were used in this study; in addition a topographic map for Baghdad city was used also in this study. I his work includes several stages, fust is collecting of satellite images for the study area and applying the geometric correction using (ERDAS 9.1) software, followed by field investigations including activities such as survey operations in the urea using the GPS device and collecting soil samples from certain positions. Then the properties of soil are determined, this includes determination the physical properties of soil to be used according to the (USCS), the visible measurements for the soil, and later the microwave measurements were recorded. Microwave experimental setup has been operated to work with x band for studying the reflection coefficient of these waves from the moisture content and the texture change of soil.

Also an experiment has been done to detect the pipes in soil by using (iron, plastic) pipes material with different diameters lo determine and study the changes in reflection coefficient The last stage is preparing a geographic data base of the soil for the study area associated with the digital maps for that purpose.

The representation of the soil physical characteristics established using (GIS) technique through using the {Arc GIS 9-1). The main results of the study that the spatial merge between the three-bands image (IKONOS) and the one band image iQUICK BIRD) products anew color image with high resolution for the study ar.

a which is considered the best in giving explanation to visual sensing of the kind of soil and it has been found that the soil of the study area is predominated by silt and clay. Also the use of microwave remote sensing technique is used to investigate the variation in soil types in their properties and to detect buried pipes in soil and investigate any leaked that can happen in it. The unsupervised classification operation gives simple representation of the study area description and describes the soil types by integrating them together, where the supervised classification for merged image indicates good representation for the land cover types with overall classification accuracy of 80 %, On the other hand, a geographical database and information about layers of .oil for the overall studied area have been registered and constructed digitally to represent the geotechnical soil characteristics in associated files, producing digital soil maps.
