الملخص الإنجليزي

Owing to the regular shortage in Tigris River water levels, this research is subjected to study the possibility of constructing a regulation structure south of Baghdad and upstream the Tigris-Diyala Rivers confluence to provide adequate water levels throughout the River channel inside the city of Baghdad. A brief review on types and alternatives of the regulation structures is presented; comparisons between them are also presented leading to the best choice satisfying all needed hydraulic and operation requirements.

Accordingly, a radial-gated barrage is recommended. To evaluate the impacts of constructing such a structure, a detailed study for the computation of surface water profiles is carried out for three different ponding levels namely " 29, 30, and 31" (m.

L).

Among other available models dealing with the steady gradually varied flow type, which is dominating within the River reach under consideration, " HEC-2" mathematical model issued by the American Hydraulic Engineering Center is selected based on the presented comparisons performed for the available models. Runs for this model require the magnitude of the resistance coefficient for the River reach under consideration, which is a complicated parameter, and its evaluation in natural streams is considered as one of the main problems in hydraulic engineering, since it is dependent on different parameters difficult to quantify concerning the river reach under consideration.

A brief review on the estimation techniques widely used on the relevant studies is presented, which estimate this coefficient in a single cross-section only, but due to the complexity arising in those methods and the large number of cross-sections involved into the River reach, a practical trial and error procedure between two existing gauging-stations with known rating-curves as boundary conditions is carried out for the full range of discharge, which is found to be (170 - 3000 m3 / sec.) according to the River records and limitations...

The computed values reflect the real resistance mechanism offered by the boundaries for the whole reach and not for a single cross-section as in the Manning resistance coefficient "n ". Accordingly, using the " HEC-2 " computer package, backwater curves along-with the natural water surface profiles are computed for the full range of discharge and plotted together for comparison.

In addition, regressions correlating the surface water levels and their associated ground-water tables on the adjacent banks are also carried out. Based on these regressions and the computed water level profiles, an evaluation for the three proposed pond levels at the proposed Ban-age site is carried out.

It is found that the (m.

1.) pond level alternative is satisfactoiy to provide sufficient water levels inside city, and on the contrary of the other pond alternatives, it has no adverse effects on the ground water table along the River banks, hence this pond level is recommended.

ased on the results obtained, the general conclusions and recommendations are finally presented.
