In this thesis, the economic dispatch algorithm is used to reduce the losses in the power system.

The method of LaGrange was built to solve the problem of losses reduction case to reduce the total generation cost. The some capacitors in the power system are installed them on the buses of the system to minimize the power Josses and get the best total generation cost.

To achieve that, the present work deals with the determination of the optimal location and size of capacitors in transmission power system where, the participation factor algorithm and the steady state genetic algorithm are proposed to select the best locations for the capacitors (by the first algorithm PF) and determine the optimal size for them (by the second algorithm (GA), taking into consideration die cost of power losses, cost of fuel, and cost of the capacitors. The optimal capacitor placement method is based on the load equations in transmission system, In this method, capacitor placement is applied to correct voltage deviation, power factor and reduce real power loss.

The capacitor placement problem is a combination optimization problem having an objective function composed of power Josses and annual capacitor installation costs subject to bus voltage constraints.

This problem is commonly solved by employing mathematical programming methods in the genetic algorithm to obtain the optimal solution.

The method of load flow solution is Newton-Raphson with high accuracy employed.

The proposed algorithm has been implemented in technical (MA LAB 7.0) and tested on two test systems : 1- General System with 26 Buses / 6 Generators 2- Iraqi System, with 22 Buses / 10 Generators Tests show GA is an optimization search technique, with high accuracy, and avoids local minimum.

The present research uses ADFIE MODEL as one of the instructional design models which are used in instructional computer programs, and the program is evaluated by taking opinions experts in instructional technology and electrical power engineering fields and others included a sample so the targeted the targeted group which represent the fourth stage students of electrical engineering and postgraduate students of power engineering.

The most important conclusions can be summarized as follows : - The results are nearly equal with two references obtained by using different mathematical solution methods.

They are an indication of the efficiency of computer programs used to analyze economic dispatch problem.

This enables the users to get trustworthy results.
