The presence of gypsum (CaS04, 2H20) in soils and the consequent ; formation of gypsums soils are found throughout various parts of the I world.

It is a dominate mineral that exists in Iraq, and its content in the soil changes according to its exposure to water that flows on or underground surface.

The presence of gypsum in soils may cause severe problems in both agricultural and civil engineering especially under hydraulic structures Therefore; it is very important to measure gypsum content in soil exactly and accurately.

Different methods have been discussed to check the adequacy of each technique of measuring gypsum content and discuss the difference between the results of these methods.

Data of fifteen locations from different regions in Iraq arc presented and discussed.

Seven methods, among several suggested methods, are used for evaluation them for estimating gypsum content.

Three methods (Bower and Huss), (Diehl - Cheng) and (Laser werff et.al.), depend on distilled water to extract gypsum, but the differ in the way by which gypsum becomes precipitate.

The three other methods (the barium sulfate method), (the amended barium sulfate method) and (Covalence method), depend on hydrochloric acid to extract gypsum while one of these seven methods depends on drying to determine gypsum content from loss of crystal-water content Statistical analysis is used to show variations in test results within each method.

The tests results showed that the best method for determination of gypsum content for all ranges was that suggested by.

This conclusion was reached after comparing some results with a-Ray diffraction.
