Recognition of machining features is considered as a translator between Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) of machined parts.

CAD produces part descriptions in terms of geometric entities or design features which are converted into manufacturing features that required in Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) activities.

This research developed an expert system that helps in generate automated part programming system for symmetrical rotational parts that manufactured on CNC lathe.

To realize this objective, the implementation of feature recognition technique is required.

The importance of feature recognition became from that different CAD software uses different types of databases to store the part information; therefore, The CAD data must be interpreted so as to generate part representations in terms of machining features.

In this research geometric information of a symmetrical rotational part is translated into manufacturing information through a Data Exchange Format (DXF) file.

A feature recognition algorithm is used to recognize different features of the part from its DXF file, where geometric information of the part is stored after respective DXF codes then using the data extracted from DXF file, so, each feature of the part is recognized.

At this point, with the help of knowledge-based facilities and a building Database, manufacturing features are used to generate automated process planning by means : sequence of operation, cutter location data and part programming.
