A supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system lathers data from monitored points compares them against expected normal values and generates alarms when values are abnormal. Building an expert system, which diagnoses the problems that occur in power plants and remedies of such problems, will help the operators who suffer from lack of experience in power plants. In this work, an expert event processor (EXEVPROC) system for Iraqi National Control Center Power Station has been built.

The main functions of the system are event filtering (suppressing nuisance alarms), user interface, security, fault identification, fault solving recommendation, automatic fault solving, reports and help system.

Visual C++ programming language is used as the environment for building, the software module, the database files are built by using Visual FoxPro, but database functions are programmed using C-language to access database information. The system operates automatically for certain events (it solves the problems automatically when the alarms occur) or manually (it gives actions and recommendations to the operators in Iraqi National Control Center to solve the problems when alarms occur).

The knowledge required to build such system is collected from experienced operators and power plant specifications. The system has been tested and worked successfully using real data in Iraqi National Control Center.
