A comparison study of using different commercial bleaching liquids for the disinfection of water supplies in rural areas

The present study aims at disinfecting water supplies in which the available residual chlorine is rather low particularly in the outskirts of large cities, such as Baghdad, and the remote rural villages.

The process of disinfection is carried cut by adding commercial bleaching liquids available in our local markets to raw settled water or to filtered water to render it, biologically, safe for human consumption, The experiments were carried out at the laboratories of AL-Wethba and that of 7-Nissan.

The results of the study showed- that it was possible to define proper doses of the different bleaching liquids needed to disinfect raw settled water or filtered water in order to get combined residual chlorine concentrated by 0.2 mg / it disinfect one cubic meter of raw settled water we had to add 4 teaspoonful's of “AL-Lath” bleaching liquid, whereas to get free residual chlorine of the same concentration to disinfect one cubic meter of water we had to add 5 heaping table-spoonful's.

With respect to disinfect filtered water by the same bleaching liquid w AL-Lath was should add 4 teaspoonful's concentrated by 0, 2 mg / to combined residual chlorine and 9 heaping table-spoonful's with the same concentration to get free residual chlorine to disinfect one cubic meter of filtered water.

The study also found out that the bleaching liquids "AL-Laith", "Fas" and "Nazic" can be used safely to disinfect raw settled water while "AL-Warkaa" and, "Ilaf H were found to be poor and hence not safe disinfectants.
