Slip power (or energy1) recovery' techniques is used for the speed control of wound rotor induction motor (IM) drives system.

Its principle operation is concentrated on the rotor region of the induction motor and not on the stator as in most of other IM drives.

Consequently the slip power is rectified bay a diode bridge and in turn converted into ac line frequency by a 3-phase line commutated inverter and fed back to ac mains through a recovery transformer.

This complicated drive system led the researches to investigate for a high efficient and reliable drive system to be implemented for this type of the speed control This thesis is concerned with the analysis and design of a novel form of drive system which consists of, Diode Bridge, smoothing inductor; line commutated inverter (three phase and single phase), recovery transformer and closed loop schemes suitable for the speed control.

The closed loop control consists of two feedback loops, the speed and the current loops.

The controllers used in these two loops arc of the proportional plus integral (PI) type.

Theoretical predictions are supported by practical measurements.

A detailed analysis of the performance and behaviour or the slip power transient conditions are presented using the dc/ac equivalent circuit and mainly the synchronously rotating reference frame theory with two types of line commutated inverters such as single phase and three phase fully controlled bridge.

The results and characteristics obtained shows no much differences between the three phase and single phase inverters.

Thus a single phase line commutated inverter can be used for small sizes of three phase induction motor, for the slip power recovery drives system, so as to keep the dives cost low.

Preliminary harmonics study of the slip power recovery' induction motor drive system shows, the harmonic current produced in the rotor can be reflected to the stator by transformation action, and as a result, the harmonics torque are produced which is given as a function of slip of the motor and consequently of the firing angle (a) of the inverter.

It cable shown [hat harmonic torque is small compared to the average torque and therefore can be neglected for practical purposes.

The predicted results obtained are verified experimentally.

The details studies of the sability and harmonics contents of the slip power recovery drive system can be implemented for the future work.
