To meet Kirkuk city water requirements, especially during Jure to September.
Al-Furat Center for studies and Designs of Irrigation Projects supervised a project for drilling 40 wells in Jalal basin, near Altun-Kupri area at the Lesser Zap River, to supply Kirkuk municipality by an average discharge of 400I / s in order to maintain the domestic and irrigation requirements.
The aim of this study is to find an operation policy for the wells system to obtain a minimum drawdown in groundwater level in the area, minimum effects on the groundwater system, and a realistic operation programme.
The area of the project is about 35 km2, the wells are unevenly distributed in the area and their average depths ranged between 120-130 m.
The main geological formations are mainly composed of gravel with sand and clay Values of aquifer parameters (transmit silo and-storage coefficient} and well condition were evaluated according to the field test.
An analytical model was prepared in order to calculate the occurring drawdown in the groundwater level due to pumps operation .
In this model, different geometrical methods were used in order to distribute the effected nodes where the drawdown in the groundwater level will be calculated.
These methods are : regular Mesh Method , Polygonal Method , Well Point Method, and Node Drawdown Method In these all methods, Theism equation and the principles of multiple well flow system were used to determine the effects of operating the pumps at each node.
All the wells in the above mentioned methods were operated continuously at a rate 24 hrs / day for different periods of 1,1030 and 120 days.
